The Word of God: What Jesus Said About It

It is important to first understand what Jesus said about why we must learn the word of God, because when we know what Jesus said about it it helps us to understand why we must study it , and that in turn helps us to know HOW to study it.
After all, He IS the Word of God.

John 1:1: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Jesus was the God of creation.Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
He IS the Word and the fellowship of the mystery: Eph 3:9
And to make all [men] see what [is] the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
Col 1:17
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Hbr 1:10
And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
Rev 1:8
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Rev 21:6
And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
Joe 3:18
And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.
Jhn 7:37
In the last day, that great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
Jhn 7:38
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
There are many Bible courses out there , and they teach a lot of things. There are courses where you can start at the book of Genesis and go through the whole Bible verse by verse.

There are courses where you can take certain topics and do an extensive study on them covering everything the Bible has to say about a certain subject.

There are also courses that teach you the Bible doctrines of a certain church, group or denomination. In this way the Bible is used as a sort of way of enforcing beliefs the group already has but needs "proof" from the Bible that it is scriptural.

If you study the Bible in this way, then you are using the Bible as a mere reference book, to try to justify something you are already doing or want to do, or don't want to do.

So what IS the best way to study the Word of God? What is it for anyway? Knowing the purpose of it in the first place and why God gave it to man helps greatly in knowing why we should study it, and how.

Let us take a look at what the Son of God, Jesus, said about the Word and draw our first conclusions from Him

Mat 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Here Jesus is talking to the devil, Satan, in the wilderness after 40 days of fasting. Satan tells Him to turn the stones into bread if He is really the Son of God. Satan wasn't really concerned with Jesus getting food in His tummy, but rather with tempting Him to stop trusting the Father and try to get Him to prove who he was.

Jesus answers Satan right from the Word of God (Deut 8:3), and quotes a unique verse, applying it to himself as being a man, since he is The Son of man. He is telling Satan, "look here, bud, here I was in the desert for 40 days feeding off of the Words of my Father ONLY and you come to me telling me I need to eat bread." I could see Jesus just about laughing right in the devil's face! What , with hearing the spoken Word from the Son of God Himself, and hearing Jesus

Jesus tells Satan how important knowing the Word of God is. Satan of course ignores Jesus and posts another riddle to Him. This time Satan even quotes from the Word of God (Deut 6:16) to show Jesus that he also knows the Word. Similar to what many Christians do quoting back and forth to each other to prove their point. Satan was trying to prove his point by quoting Jesus the Word, but Jesus quotes it right back to Satan.

Mat 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Jesus is declaring to Satan the He is God and he should not tempt him. Jesus quoted one of the ten commandments to Satan. But I thought the 10 commandments were only for Israel? Here is Jesus quoting it to Satan telling him that he should not tempt Him. Why did Jesus quote from the 10 commandments if they were not for Satan also? Obviously Satan already knew this truth. He ignores that too, and throws another fiery dart at Jesus.

Mat 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
Mat 4:9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

This time Satan doesn't quote the Word. He couldn't apply the Word to that one, because he already knew what the word said about self glorification, and there were plenty of examples already in the Old Testament.

However, Jesus has his shield of faith up and quenches that fiery dart with it and uses the sword of the spirit once again to deal a defeat to Satan.
Mat 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Jesus didn't take any flack from the devil, and Satan knew he could not overcome Jesus with these temptations after that so he split the scene.
Jesus starts off His ministry, even before he is baptized and anointed with the Holy ghost by blasting the devil away with the Word, showing that the most powerful way to fight Satan is with the Word of God. The most effective way to counter the lies of Satan is by knowing the Word of God and how to use it.

If the devil would come and try to attack Jesus with all of these lies and false promises, how much more would he attack us and try to get US to believe him, who are much weaker than Jesus and know so much less of the Word of God than He does?

So here we have The First Reason why God wants us to study His Word. It's not the main reason. There are many reasons but this is sure a good one don't you think? To "answer him" and to "resist the devil" and "that ye may quench all the fiery darts of the wicked"

It was the Word only that the centurion had faith in, even if jesus didn't come in the flesh to heal his servant.
Mat 8:8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

This shows the awesome power of the WORDS of Jesus, that they had the power to heal even without His bodily presence! And still do! Because His presence is with us now in even MORE power than before through the Holy Spirit!

Mat 13:23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth [it]; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

The Word is the seed that if sown in good, receptive hearts will bring forth much fruit for the kingdom. The Word, in order to bring forth fruit, first has to be sown in the heart. Our hearts were made for the Word of God just the same as the ground was made for seeds. The same process takes place in our hearts as do the seeds that are planted in the ground.

They germinate and bring forth the root first, then the stem, then whatever is on the stem, and this is the way Jesus explained how the Word takes root in our hearts and can bring forth fruit. This is by meditating wholly on the Word of God and that is how you get revelation knowledge of the Word:;
Pro 1:5 A wise [man] will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

Pro 2:4
If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as [for] hid treasures,
Pro 2:5
Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

Pro 2:6
For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth [cometh] knowledge and understanding.

The Word gives you a new heart:

Eze 18:31
Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
Eze 36:26
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

Receiving the Word into your heart and letting it change you is receiving Jesus, but rejecting the word is rejecting Jesus.

Jhn 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
Jhn 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:
Jhn 1:13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Peter remembered the Words of Jesus, what He said about him denying Jesus, and that caused him to repent. Not for fear, but because he knew Jesus loved him and he had denied Him.
Mat 26:75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

Jesus commanded the unclean spirits to depart with His Word: Luk 4:36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word [is] this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.

The Words of Jesus are Spirit and life: So when we study them we are connecting to that Spirit and life; Jhn 6:63

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life.
Gen 2:7
And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Rom 8:2
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
1Cr 15:45
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam [was made] a quickening spirit.
2Cr 3:6
Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
1Pe 3:18
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

The words are the most important thing and are the secret to spiritual life or death. And more reasons why we need to learn the Word of God.
Jhn 6:68
Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.
Jhn 12:50
And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
Psa 19:7
The law of the LORD [is] perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD [is] sure, making wise the simple.
Psa 19:8
The statutes of the LORD [are] right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD [is] pure, enlightening the eyes.
Psa 19:9
The fear of the LORD [is] clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD [are] true [and] righteous altogether.
Psa 19:10 More to be desired [are they] than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
Psa 19:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: [and] in keeping of them [there is] great reward.

Jesus came to give us the Word of the Father. That is the most important thing to the Father, that we receive and LOVE the Words He gave Jesus to pass on to His disciples.
Jhn 17:8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received [them], and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
Jhn 3:33
He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
Pro 8:10
Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
Jhn 17:6
I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

And Jesus had much more to say about the Words of the Father and His Words; too much to write it all here, so that is why you have a Bible so you can read it and how important the word is. Anything or anyone that puts down the Word of God is anti-christ and has the spirit of anti-christ.
